Born in Douala 31 years ago, Mbakop Nfongan Josiane will be the only referee to represent Cameroon in the 2018 Women’s Africa cup of nations in Ghana as an assistant referee.
Considered one of the best female referees in Cameroon and even voted best assistant referee in Cameroon in the 2017 season,she is a rare breed of a woman whose officiating skills is now getting the attention it deserves.
Mbakop will be in Ghana amongst referees shortlisted to take charge of games in the upcoming women tournament,it will be the second competition in a row in which she has been selected by CAF after her debut in Cameroon in the 2016 tournament.
Her movement up the ladder has not been by accident.Back in her secondary school days,she played football as a part time activity but took Athletics very serious.
In the late 90’s she won medals as Champion in 200 meters and 400 meters runs.
Her Love for refereeing came in 2004 when the young Mbakop watched a men’s football game and saw a woman as a center referee for her first time,that was how she caught the refereeing virus and immediately started training to become a referee.
She has been on a journey to success without turning behind since she took charge of the 2012 cup of Cameroon final in the Women’s category.
She is now a FIFA referee and participated in the 2016 Under 17 world cup in Jordan. The 2018 AWCON in Ghana will be her 3rd major tournament in an already glittering career.
The mother of one child comes from a family of 9 children that is 7 girls and 2 boys of which she is the only one involved in football at this level.
Given her experience, she has all it takes to be in the biggest Women football event in the continent amongst the best assistant referees one can ever think of.
In the just ended season Josiane handled some big games in the Cameroon league including PWD social club of Bamenda’s all important clash in against Renaissance in Odza,a game in which she made some big calls.
Former PWD player, now coach of the club Jean Baptiste Toguem, is on record to have described Mbakop after that game as the best female referee in Cameroon.
